What's it like to be vegan? Meet the Vegan Monk, vegan for 4 years!

This week's Vegan feature is the Instagram famous Vegan Monk! He is hugely influential in the vegan Instagram community and is a big proponent of a spiritually-led approach to veganism rooted in peace, love and understanding. He is also a professional body builder and personal trainer based out of the Bay Area. Read on to learn more about the Vegan Monk's journey to veganism.

How did you find your way to veganism?

I made my way to veganism through my spirit practice. Three years into my meditation practice, I was having breakfast with a friend and he asked me "are you vegetarian?" because I had ordered the vegetarian omelette. I had no clue what a vegan was at the time and never thought about being veggie, but the answer was "yes, I am." I didn't know why I said yes, but what I later realized is I made a connection to all life and therefore didn't want any being to suffer. And then when I found out about the egg and milk process, I went vegan. 

What’s your favorite part of being vegan?

Knowing that I am not contributing to another's suffering. Everything else is great, too. 

What is the hardest part of being vegan and how do you overcome that?

The hardest part of being vegan initially was finding what to replace meat with. No problems at all now. As a vegan, you will learn what you like with time. 

What’s your favorite vegan dish to eat?

Vegan lasagna. My wife hooks it up. :)

Favorite vegan restaurant?

My favorite vegan restaurant is the Veghub in Oakland. Not only for the food, but for the great people and energy that's there.
