What’s it like to be Vegan? Meet Daniella, vegan for about 3 years
This week's Vegan feature is my friend and informal vegan mentor of sorts, Daniella. We worked together years ago and have stayed in touch as we've both been on intertwined, but very different, journeys to veganism. She is an amazing human, a certified Doula, a yoga teacher, vegan and mistica. Follow her adventures on Instagram, @lamisticayella.
How did you find your way to veganism?
I had been vegetarian for over a decade, but the step to veganism always seemed too hard. But then I started to get some weird health things that did not make me feel good so I went where most people go: the internet. I stumbled on some Youtube videos on high carb veganism and decided to give it a shot! I loved how I felt both physically, mentally, & spiritually and have stuck to it ever since. It now is a major part of my spiritual practice.
What’s your favorite part of being vegan?
Delicious, filling, nutritious meals that do not require violence to any animal!
What is the hardest part of being vegan and how do you overcome that?
Honestly, having to explain my veganism to people that just want to pick a fight. My instinct is to take it personally & react, but whenever I am in that situation I try my best to 1) lead with love & compassion 2) tailor my message to my audience , and 3) if in the vicinity of food, entice people with delicious vegan options. It is uncomfortable at first, but if I manage to even shift someone's thinking by .001%, it was all worth it.
What’s your favorite vegan dish to eat?
Why do I have to pick one? Beans and Rice. Potatoes. and Fruits. all the fruits.
Favorite vegan restaurant?
Locally: Shizen Vegan Sushi in San Francisco
What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting your vegan journey?
Simple meals are where it's at! If you are using the highest quality and freshest ingredients available, you don't have to over-complicate your life. You will also learn to love the innate deliciousness of fruits & veggies!
